Lucas Vorsterman's portrait, "William Cavendish, 1st Marquis and Duke of Newcastle" is typical of his outstanding method of engraving. Avoiding unnecessary ornamentation, Vorsterman has here engraved a strong and penetrating image composed of close hatched lines and bold flicks. This outstanding portrait is clearly from the hand of a master. "William Cavendish" is an original engraving designed by Anthony van Dyck and engraved by Lucas Vorsterman. It was created around 1630 when both the painter and engraver resided and worked in England. This impression is printed upon fine hand-made, laid seventeenth century paper and with margins trimmed to the plate mark, as usual. It is signed in the plate by Vorsterman and with his distinctive monogram. |

Note: | Lucas Vorsterman: In the early seventeenth century British painting and engraving was dominated by the talents of foreign artists. In the years comprising the reign of the Stuart’s there was a wide gulf between the pedestrian abilities of English born engravers and the sophisticated techniques of transplanted, non-English engravers, such as Robert van Voerst, Elstracke and the van de Passe family. These engravers specialized in the small portrait study with its elaborate scroll work incorporating the sitter’s coat-of-arms and titles. The skills shown by these early engravers set the stage for the latter seventeenth century portrait engravings of such fine English artists as William Faithorne and David Loggan. |
In the 1620’s London was fortunate to be visited by two of the most renowned portraitists of any era; the painter, Anthony van Dyck, and the engraver, Lucas Vorsterman. At a very early age Lucas Vorsterman entered the studio of Peter Paul Rubens. Rubens quickly recognized Lucas Vorsterman's talent for engraving and set his young student to create plates based upon his own designs. This was the beginning of the famous Rubens School of Engraving and such artists as Paulus Pontius and the Bolswerts brothers soon followed in Lucas Vorsterman's footsteps. The year 1622, however, marked an almost violent end in the relationship of Vorsterman and Rubens. The exact incident is shrouded in mystery and speculation, yet it is known that death threats were issued from both parties. Lucas Vorsterman thus set out on his own.
Lucas Vorsterman visited England in 1623 and lived there until 1631. It is believed he was persuaded to visit England by the great collector and patron, the Earl of Arundel, who was also responsible for bringing Wenzel Hollar to the country. While in England Lucas Vorsterman engraved the portraits of King Charles I, Thomas Howard and William Cavendish. He was also commissioned by the King to engrave historical portraits of Sir Thomas More, the Duke of Norfolk and Erasmus. As well, Vorsterman first came in contact with the great painter and designer, Anthony Van Dyck, in Britain. Later, the two artists worked closely together on perhaps the most famous series of portrait engravings ever published, Van Dyck’s Iconography.

Anthony Van Dyck: At the age of nineteen Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp, 1599-1641) was admitted into the painter's Guild of Antwerp, as a Master. A year later he became the senior assistant to Peter Paul Rubens. A superb portraitist, Van Dyck became famous throughout Europe and later was appointed court painter to King James the First of England.
William Cavendish, 1st Marquis and Duke of Newcastle (1593 - 1676): A major figure in 17th century England, William Cavendish was a Royalist General, a superb horseman and swordsman and a poet, playwright and patron of the arts. He was a close friend of King Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria and was entrusted with the education of the future Charles II. During the Civil War Cavendish led campaigns in the north, ultimately suffering a major defeat at Marston Moor. He then went into exile abroad with his family until the return of the monarchy during the Restoration.
William Cavendish was regarded as perhaps the finest horseman of his era. His book, "A New Method of Extraordinary Invention to Dress Horses and Work Them According to Nature" (1667), is considered a classic. He was also very active in the arts, writing a number of plays and poems. Of even more importance he was both a friend and patron of such authors as Ben Jonson and John Dryden, the philosophers, Hobbes and Descartes, and the painter, Anthony Van Dyck.
