Note: |
Lucas Vorsterman, the Younger (Antwerp, c. 1605 - 1667), studied engraving
techniques under his celebrated father. Lucas Vorsterman, the Elder, worked
under both Rubens and Van Dyck and is considered by many to be the greatest
interpretive engraver of these artists. Like his father, Lucas Vorsterman
was highly regarded for his portraits. He also, however, was an accomplished
engraver of landscapes and figure studies after such masters as Snyders
and Holbein. As well, he engraved a number of equestrian subjects after
the designs of Diepenbeek. |
|
This portrait of the Flemish painter, "Adrian
de Bie" (1594-1661) formed part of a series of depictions of painters
and sculptors which was initially published in Antwerp in 1649 under the
title of "Images de Diverses Hommes D'Esprit, Qui Par Leur Art
et Science". In the somewhat confusing history of this publication,
further editions appeared in the following years in both Holland and England
with different titles such as, Het Gulden Cabinet and The Portraits
of the most Eminent Painters. Each of these subsequent editions saw
the inclusion of some new engravings and the deletions of others. Other
prominent engravers who contributed portraits to the series included Wenzel
Hollar, Paulus Pontius, Pieter de Jode and Jacob Neefs. |
|
Lucas Vorsterman's "Adrianus de Bie" belongs to the first
published edition of this set. First edition impressions are easily distinguishable
by their clarity of line and depth of tonal values. Moreover, only first
edition impressions were printed without the text appearing on the verso
and without numeration. (On this impression the number '58' has been added
in fountain pen by the hand of a former collector.) This striking portrayal
therefore represents an early, initial impression. |

This original 17th century engraving includes text beneath Adrian de Bie's portrait, it reads; "Adrianus de Bie. Paintre bien estime ne grandes figures et aultres ordonnances, Pere de l'
Auctheur de ce livre, qu'il at demeure long temps en Italie etc. ne dans la ville de Lijere en l'an 1594. Petrus Meert Pinxit. Lucas Vorsterman Junior Sculpsit." A loose translation for this text is (Adrian de Bie. A well esteemed painter of great figures and other ordinances, father of the author of books, He lived in Italy for a long time etc. Born in the village of Lier in the year, 1594. Designed by Petrus Meert. Engraved by Lucas Vorsterman, the Younger.) (Adrianus, Adrian) or Adriaan de Bie (1594-1661) was the father of Cornelis de Bie (Lier, Belgium, 1627 - 1715), a Flemish notary by profession, a rederijker (a rhetorician is a member of a Dutch dramatic society, highly interested in dramas and lyrics), as well as being the author of fine emblem books, plays and other literature. However, Cornelis de Bie is best known for his noteworthy biographical compilation of 17th century Dutch painters published in Antwerp under the title, "Het Gulden Cabinet van de Edel Vry Edel Vry Schilder-Const... (The Golden Cabinet of the Nobel Liberal Arts of Painting) first published in (1661-1662). |

Petrus Meert 'Pieter Meert, or Peeter Meert' (Brussels, 1619 - 1669): According to Cornelis de Bie's "Het Gulden Cabinet vande Edel Vry Schilder-Conts, ..." (1661-1662) pp. 351-352, Petrus Meert was a fine early Flemish Baroque portrait painter, also listed under, Pieter Meert, Peeter Meerte, and possibly a few other names in various directories. Meert is said to have worked in the style of Anthony van Dyke. His paintings were included in the Museum in Brussels, in the city guilds, and the Berlin Museum. Dr. Waagen, director of the Royal Gallery of Pictures, Berlin, and the author of the "Handbook of Painting: The German, Flemish, and Dutch Schools" published in London by John Muray, (1860), Volume 2, p.312, notes; "Peter Meert's portraits exhibit good conception, though of somewhat prosaic character; warm and clear warm and clear colouring; a broad touch, and fine impasto." Waagen also noted that a picture representing members of the magistracy of Brussels was held in their Museum. And, the portraits of a naval captain and his wife, were held in the Berlin Museum, No. 844. Lucas Vorsterman, the Younger's portrait of the Flemish painter, Adrianus de Bie is based upon a painting created by Meert. It is a fine, original example of the portrait art created by the 17th century Belgian artist, Petrus Meert. |
