Rudolf Von Alt's original etching, "Der Doppel Erker der Alten Burg in Klosterneuburg" is an accomplished work of art printed upon wove paper and with full margins as published in Vienna by Vervielfaltigende Kunst in 1876. This original impression is dated and signed in the plate with the Von Alt's monogram to the lower right. "Der Doppel Erker der Alten Burg in Klosterneuburg" is a fine, original example of the 19th century architectural art created by the Austrian artist, Rudolf Von Alt. Von Alt's architectural etching depicts the double bay windows at the old monastery in Klosterneuburg, (Stift Klosterneuburg). The 12th century Roman Catholic monastery of Augustinian Canons is located in the town of Klosterneuburg, lower Austria just outside the city of Vienna. It was founded by Saint Leopold III of Baberberg, the patron Saint of Austria and his wife, Agnes of Germany in 1114. The name Klosterneuburg merges a combination of words, the first, Kloster means Stift or abbey, the second part neu Burg means the new castle and as mentioned earlier, both established by Saint Leopold. The monastery premises houses such wonders as the old chapel which contains Saint Leopold's tomb and many sacred art treasures such as the famous Verdun Altar, its vast library with over thirty thousand books and manuscripts, the treasure chamber, its remarkable Baroque wine cellar, as well as many other features of historical importance and interest. |

He first studied under his father, Jacob Alt (1789-1872), and then completed his education at the Academy of Vienna. He then traveled extensively through Austria, Italy and Switzerland and began exhibiting his art in 1834 in such major cities as Berlin, Munich, Vienna, Dresden and Paris. Rudolf von Alt was a full member of both the Berlin and Vienna Academies. |
In total, Rudolf von Alt created twenty-nine original lithographs and twenty original etchings during his career. This original etching entitled, "Der Doppel Erker der Alten Burg in Klosterneuburg" was commissioned by the Viennese publisher, Vervielfaltigende Kunst, in 1876. A loose translation for the title of this original etching is (The Double Bay of the Old Monestary in Klosterneuburg). This is a beautiful example of Rudolf von Alt's architectural art.

Vervielfaltigende Kunst: During the late nineteenth and early twentieth century special art journals around the world published original etchings, lithographs and woodcuts on a regular basis. Some of the greatest original prints from this classic era were commissioned and published by "The Studio", in London, "Pan", in Germany, "The Print Connoisseur", in America, and "Vervielfaltigende Kunst", in Vienna.
"Vervielfaltigende Kunst" issued its first original etching in 1871. During the following sixty years it published masterworks by Austrian, German, Swiss, French, Dutch, Czech and English artists. More internationally focused and less conservative than most publishers of original art, it became a spearhead for the vibrant experiments of Symbolist, Expressionist and Weimar artists during the initial decades of the twentieth century. And, of equal importance, its superb printing techniques were second to no publisher in the world. As a result, "Vervielfaltigende Kunst" is now regarded as a most vital art publisher of its time.
