Note: | By the mid eighteenth century Canaletto (1697-1768) had established himself as Europe's greatest view-painter and etcher. The prime subject for both his paintings and etchings was, of course, Venice, and through his innovative art it became Europe's most famous city. As early as 1725 Canaletto created designs to be engraved by selected artists. His primary etcher was Antonio Visentini, who studied art under Canaletto. Antonio Visentini was also an architect and author of treatises on artistic perspective. Later in his career he assumed the post of Professor at the Venice Academy. |
Antonio Visentini was the sole engraver for Canaletto's first great series of views entitled, Urbis Venetiarum Prospectus Celebriores ex Antonii Canal. The series commenced around 1728 and was completed in 1735. Altogether thirty-eight etchings and engravings were printed. These works were divided into two parts; the first part dealing with views covering the Grand Canal to the Rialto and the second, with scenes of the city to the north to the Piazza San Marco. This original etching entiled Areae Majoris San Marci Prospectus ad Templum San Geminiani (Piazza San Marco Looking Towards San Geminiano) was one of the last works of art in the set and was thus created and published in 1735. | |
In his etchings (either created or designed by him) and paintings, Canaletto set the standard. One scholar writes,
With its brilliant use of light and shade and wonderful observations of the people and animals depicted in the piazza, these words clearly apply to this original etching. |
