Note:	Enrico Vannuccini: A 20th century Italian painter and etcher, Enrico Vannuccini moved to Florence at an early age. After serving briefly in the military during the First World War Vannuccini went to Milan to work for an advertising agency. When the agency failed, Enrico Vannuccini moved to Rome. In Rome he made the acquaintance of such leading Italian artists as De Chirico, Ungaretti and Alberto Martini. Shortly after the end of World War Two, Vannuccini moved to Griante where he remained for the rest of his life.
	During his career, Enrico Vannuccini was constantly commissioned for his striking ex-libris etchings which he designed and etched for some of Italy’s greatest collectors. The Milan publisher, Bolaffio, issued a number of Vannuccini’s original etchings during the latter 1940’s in signed and limited editions of one hundred impressions. Such is the case with this impression of "Ex Libris Dr. Luigi Airoldi" which depicts a disrobed woman with long flowing hair, possibly a sorceress, kneeling beside what appears to be a magic orb or crystal ball. In the background, one can see a Chinese dragon writhing towards the orb, thus completing the scene and successfully creating an aura of mystic charm. Along with the Unicorn, the Phoenix and the Tortoise, the Chinese Dragon is considered a Celestial and benevolent creature in Chinese mythology and culture.
	Today the ex-libris art of Enrico Vannuccini is included in such collections as the Biblioteca Comunale di Milano.
	Ex-Libris etchings, engravings and woodcuts date all the way back to the mid fifteenth century. Their function was initially quite utilitarian as miniature prints used to signify the ownership of books. As private libraries and their owners gained more wealth and prestige, however, so did their ex-libris bookplates. Pictorial imagery became as important as the wording and titles and the finished work of art came to stand as the owner’s claim to posterity. Before long, famous artists were commissioned by prominent collectors to make their ex-libris art and during the centuries such masters as Durer, Holbein, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec and Rockwell Kent all contributed significantly to this great form of art.
	The golden age for the ex-libris print, however, began during the early twentieth century and continues to this day. In the Art Deco decades of the 1920’s and 1930’s the collecting of ex-libris etchings, linocuts and wood engravings reached such a peak that many artists in Europe and America devoted themselves almost exclusively to this area. In France, Henri Berengier and Valentin Le Campion gained an international reputation for their ex-libris art and were constantly commissioned by book collectors around the world. In our times many prominent artists have distinguished themselves in this field, such as Enrico Vannuccini and Antonio Grimaldi (Italy), Frank Ivo van Damme (Belgium), Masao Ohba (Japan), Ladislav Rusek (Czech Republic), David Bekker (Ukraine) and Anneke Kuyper (Holland).

Signed and dated by the artist in pencil in the lower right margin. Also it is signed in the plate to the upper right. A finely printed impression and in very good condition throughout. "Ex Libris Dr. Luigi Airoldi" represents a superb, original example of the ex-libris art of Enrico Vannuccini.
