Evert Louis van Muyden: The son of the Swiss
painter, Alfred van Muyden (1818-1898), Evert van Muyden began studies
under his father. He then entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva. He
then completed his education in Berlin, under Karl Steffeck, and in Paris,
under Gerome. |
|
In 1879 Evert van Muyden moved to Rome and established himself
as a landscape painter. He remained there until 1885 when he made Paris
his permanent home. Two years later his art received a honourable mention
at the Exposition Universaile and in 1887 (the year he completed this drawing)
he received the medaille de bronze. Van Muyden's art was now firmly established
and during the following years he was the recipient of many awards and
prizes, including the prestigious Gold Medal at the 1900 Exposition. |
|
Evert van Muyden's international reputation was established
by his talents as both a fine etcher and illustrator. In this latter category
he illustrated Alexander Dumas's, The Regent's Daughter and Le
Chevalier d'Harmental (1894), Lever's, Sir Jasper Carew, His Life
and Experiences (1894), Champfleury's, Contes choisis (1899), Lever's,
Maurice Tiernay, the Soldier of Fortune (1901), Album Mariani (1901),
Frey's Die Kriegstaten der Schweiz (1905) and co-illustrated (with
Howard Pyle) Sienkiewicz's Quo Vadis (1925). In 1894 the Art Institute
of Chicago held a large exhibition of van Muyden's etchings and drawings. |
|
From 1885 Evert van Muyden concentrated mostly upon the genre
of animal studies. Many of his great animal drawings and paintings were
made at the Museum
National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris and at the Zoologischer Garten in
Basle. His fluid and naturalistic use of line and form led some critics
to compare his art in this field to that of the great early nineteenth
century painter and printmaker, Antoine-Louis Barye. As one can see in
this original drawing - a preparatory study for an etching - van Muyden
captures the essence of the animal with the fewest possible lines and a
true master's economy of means. Today, the Kunstmuseum in Basle, Switzerland,
houses a number of Evert van Muyden's original drawings and paintings in
its permanent collection. |
Provenance: |
Lion "1er Croquis Eau Forte" ('First Study
for the Etching') was formerly in the collection of the New York
art dealer, publisher and arts patron, Frederick Keppel. Keppel (1845-1912)
was New York's leading art dealer and publisher at the turn of the century.
Besides representing such etchers and painters as Whistler and Millet
he also published a large number of books on contemporary artists. One
such book was Atherton Curtis's, Catalogue of the Etched work of
Evert van Muyden (1894). In all probability Keppel acquired this original van
Muyden drawing while preparing for the publication of this book. |
|
In the 1960's this drawing and most of Keppel's collection
was acquired by the Vincent Price Collection. The Vincent Price Collection
was actually organized and funded by Sears Department Stores. Beginning
in 1962 Price, the well-known actor and art collector, was hired to purchase
fine art to be sold in their stores. This successful project continued
until 1971 and sold over 50,000 pieces of original art. The original Vincent
Price Collection with the provenance of Lion "1er Croquis Eau
Forte" ('First Study for the Etching') is included with this
drawing. |
