Michael Van der Gucht's portrait of "James Stanley, Earl of Derby" is an original engraving based upon a design by Anthony Van Dyck. It is printed upon hand made, laid paper as published between 1690 - 1700. It is a fine, original example of late seventeenth century British portrait art. This Portrait depicts James Stanley, the 7th Earl of Derby. Stanley (1607-1651) was a prominent Royalist. The National Portrait Gallery, London, lists over 200 portrait engravings by Michael Van der Gucht in its permanent collection, including an impression of "James Stanley, Earl of Derby". |

Note: | Michael Van der Gucht: Born in Antwerp, Michael Van der Gucht studied engraving techniques under Philip Bouttats. He was admitted into the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1673. By 1688 Michael Van der Gucht had moved permanently to London and was regularly commissioned to engrave portraits and architectural prints. Among his best known portraits are "James Stanley, Earl of Derby", and the poets, "William Congreve" and "Joseph Addison". |
Both his sons, Gerard and Jan Van der Gucht, became notable engravers. Michael Van der Gucht also was the engraving teacher of George Vertue and James Smith. | |
Anthony Van Dyck: At the age of nineteen Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp, 1599-1641) was admitted into the painter's Guild of Antwerp, as a Master. A year later he became the senior assistant to Rubens. A superb portraitist, Van Dyck became famous throughout Europe and later was appointed court painter to King James the First of England. | |

Condition: | Printed upon hand made, laid paper and with margins extending about one quarter of an inch from the image on all sides. Backed by a former owner onto a large sheet of stiff, wove paper. Signed and titled within the plate. A strong, early impression and in very good condition throughout. "James Stanley, Earl of Derby" represents a fine, example of late seventeenth century British portrait art. |
