The art of landscape etching reached its pinnacle in seventeenth
and early eighteenth century Holland. Rembrandt, Ruisdael, Dujardin, van
Ostade, Seeghers, Waterloo, van Everdingen and a host of others were responsible
for the ‘Golden Age’ of landscape etching. |

Jan van den Aveelen: A fine Dutch landscape
and topographical etcher, Jan van den Aveelen spent the first half of his career
in and around his native city of Leyden. There, he built a strong reputation and
was regularly employed by various publishers. His finest work, however, was yet to come.
In about 1693, Jan van den Aveelen and his fellow countryman and artist, Willem Swidde, moved permanently
to Sweden to work on the etchings for the publication, Suecia Antiqua
et Hodierna, one of the finest sets of topographical etchings created at this
time. Scara hails from this series. Altogether this massive project took
more than twenty years to complete and was not published in its entirety
until 1715. By that time, Jan van den Aveelen and Willem Swidde had each
created slightly over fifty meticulous views of cities and towns and thus
provided a valuable historic and artistic record of Sweden at this point
in history. After completing this magnificent project, Aveelen spent his
remaining years in the Swedish capital at the invitation of the King. |

Scara is a fine example of Jan van den Aveelen’s art.
The entire Swedish town is accurately laid out for us, yet the artful inclusion
of the foreground landscape with its cathedral, buildings and its travellers creates a compelling atmosphere
that permeates the entire image. |
