Theodore Valerio's original lithograph, Souvenir de Holland ('Remembrance of Holland') was published in Paris by L'Artiste and bears the publisher's name, "L'Artiste" in the upper margin, and the title, “Souvenir de Holland”, the artist's name, "Valerio pinx. et lith.", & the printer's details, "Imprime par Auguste Bry a Paris" along the lower margin. L'Artiste was founded in 1831 and almost instantly became a major vehicle for some of the finest French artists of the early and middle decades of the nineteenth century. Delacroix, Diaz, Bayre, Dupre, Raffet, Lami, Huet, Gavarni, Decamps, Dauzats, Baron, Valerio, and Deveria all contributed original lithographs to this fine publication. Souvenir de Holland is one of Theodore Valerio's earlier works of art. At the onset of the etching revival (c. 1860) Valerio turned almost exclusively to that medium and produced almost no lithographs after this date. Like his etchings, however, this striking lithograph exhibits all the precise yet subtle qualities that makes Valerio's art so appealing. |

Note: | Theodore Valerio: A gifted French etcher, painter and lithographer, Theodore Valerio was a pupil and lifelong friend of Nicholas-Toussaint Charlet. Valerio began exhibiting his art at the Paris Salon at the early age of nineteen. From 1840 to 1850 he etched, lithographed and painted scenes in France, Germany, Switzerland, Holland and Italy. Several years later Valerio made his first of many excursions to Hungary and the neighbouring states. He instantly felt a strong affinity for the lives and customs of this region’s peoples and thereafter devoted most of his art to them. |
From 1853 to 1865 Theodore Valerio delineated the lives, costumes and habitats of the Hungarian, Baltic and Slavic peoples with a number of brilliant series of etchings. Although faithfully rendering each and every detail, these etchings are no mere ‘costume’ plates or topographical representations. Both Valerio’s obvious talents and his deep reverence for the persons he portrayed make these etchings major works of art as well as valuable historical documents. The etchings secured Valerio's reputation as a master printmaker.
Among the many fine works created during his artistic career, Theodore Valerio also illustrated Souvenirs de la Monarchie Autrichienne, a set of designs etched by Valerio, printed by Pierron and Delatre, Paris, 1853. That same year (1853), this original lithograph, Souvenir de Holland (Remembrance of Holland) was published in Paris by L'Artiste and printed by Auguste Bry in Paris. Valerio's original etching entitled, Bacho-bozoucq (Souvenir de Silistrie), from the Societe des Aquafortistes, Paris, Eaux-Fortes Modernes Originales et Inedites, was published in 1864 and edited by Cadart & Luquet. Listed below are various 19th century etchings created by Thodore Valereio for a series of costume designs from the Costumes de la Hongrie et des Provinces Danubiennes Dalmatie, Montenegro, Croatie, Slavonie, Frontieres Militaires created from 1853 to 1865. In the final decade of his life, Valerio visited England. He was not however impressed by what he termed, "the gray and green appearance of the country." He spent his last years in ill health in Brittany, always longing to return to the Hungarian lands he so loved.
Today the art of Theodore Valerio is included in public museums in Rouen, Auxerre, Chateauroux, Metz, Nice and elsewhere. The Gallica, Biblioteca Nationale de France contains an impression of this original lithograph in its collection, number 1844 (SER4, T1).

L'Artiste, Paris (1831 - 1904): The Paris art journal, L'Artiste was one of the most-long lasting literary reviews encompassing the visual arts, literature, and music. It is considered by many a most important historical record of French art of the nineteenth century. Founded and directed by Achille Ricourt, this art journal published its first issue in February of 1831, under the title of, "L'Artiste. Journal de la Litterature et des Beaux-Arts" at the address, Rue de Seine-Saint-Germain, 39. Its first vignette, created by Tony Johannot depicted a painter, a sculptor, a writer and a musician accompanied by two women singing. During its long publishing history, the journal was edited by Achille Ricourt (founder/director), Arsene Houssaye (first editor in chief), a post that was also held by, Edouard Houssaye, Auguste de Vaucelle, Theophile Gautier, and others. Each volume consisted of reproductive and most importantly, original prints in the medium of lithography, etching, engraving, and other graphic mediums created by contemporary French artists such as, Paul Delaroche, Tony Johannot, Celestin-Francois Nanteuil, Francois Jules Collignon, Jules Dupre, Hector Martin, Charles Joshua Chaplin, Paul Gavarni, Auguste Delatre, Armand Hubert Simon Leleux, Charles Francois Daubigny, E. Delacroix, Theodore Valerio and many other important artists of the times. "Souvenir de Hollande" by Theodore Valerio is a striking example of the lithographic art commissioned by L'Artiste in 1853. L'Artiste published art reviews and literary works by art critics and writers such as, Pierre Jules Theophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire, Honore de Balzac, A. Houssaye, A. Dumas, and others. L'Artiste later absorbed the "Revue de Paris", another important French literary magazine founded by Louis Desire Vernon in 1829. By the time of its demise in 1904, L'Artiste had published a total of seventy two issues.
