Theodore Valerio's original etching, "Femme Valaque du Village de Tunar" translates to (Valaque Woman from the Village of Tunari). It was published in Paris in 1855 by the French publisher, printer and artist, Auguste Delatre. This impression is signed and dated in the plate by Theodore Valerio along the lower right and bears his red 'cache de vente' seal stamp above the title, and the printer's details, "Imp. A Pierron et Delatre, r Mentfaucon . I." along the lower left margin. It also bears the text, "Les Populations des Provinces Daubiennes en 1854." and the plate number (9) "IX" in the upper margin. It is one of a series etchings Theodore Valerio delineated portraying the lives of the Hungarian, Baltic and Slavic peoples (Costumes de la Hongrie et des Provinces Danubiennes Dalmatie, Montenegro, Croatie, Slavonie, Frontieres Militaires) from 1853 to 1865. The Valaque people inhabit regions of Greece, Bulgaria and Romania. Tunari is located in Romania. This study of a woman of the village of tunari is not only a beautiful work of art by the French artist, Theodore Valerio, but also a valuable historical record of the Valaque people. |

Note: | Theodore Valerio: A gifted French etcher, painter and lithographer, Theodore Valerio was a pupil and lifelong friend of Nicholas-Toussaint Charlet. Valerio began exhibiting his art at the Paris Salon at the early age of nineteen. From 1840 to 1850 he etched and painted in France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. Several years later Valerio made his first of many excursions to Hungary and its neighboring states. He instantly felt a strong affinity for the lives and customs of this region's peoples and thereafter devoted most of his art to them. |
From 1853 to 1865 Theodore Valerio delineated the lives of the Hungarian, Baltic and Slavic peoples with a number of brilliant series of etchings. Although faithfully rendering each and every detail, these etchings are no mere 'costume' plates. Both Valerio's obvious talents and his deep reverence for the persons he portrayed make these etchings major works of art as well as valuable historical documents. Today the art of Theodore Valerio is included in public museums in Rouen, Auxerre, Chateauroux, Metz, Nice and elsewhere.
Valerio's etchings delineating the lives of the Hungarian, Baltic and Slavic peoples were printed in Paris by Auguste Delatre. Perhaps the finest printer of etchings of any era, such contemporary masters as Whistler, Meryon, Millet, Rousseau and Daubigny relied upon Delatre for his skills and expertise. As well, this particular impression of Femme Valaque du Village de Tunar (Valaque Woman from the Village of Tunari) appears to be from a select edition. It is printed upon fine, China paper and impressed onto a large sheet of white, wove paper. Furthermore it bears Theodore Valerio's red 'cache de vente' 'T.V.' seal within the etching along the lower margin.
Among the many fine works created during his artistic career, Theodore Valerio also illustrated Souvenirs de la Monarchie Autrichienne, a set of designs etched by Valerio, printed by Pierron and Delatre, Paris, 1853. That same year (1853), Valerio's original lithograph, Souvenir de Holland (Remembrance of Holland) was published in Paris by L'Artiste and printed by Auguste Bry in Paris. Valerio's original etching entitled, Bacho-bozoucq (Souvenir de Silistrie), from the Societe des Aquafortistes, Paris, Eaux-Fortes Modernes Originales et Inedites, was published in 1864 and edited by Cadart & Luquet. Listed below are various 19th century etchings created by Thodore Valereio for a series of costume designs from the Costumes de la Hongrie et des Provinces Danubiennes Dalmatie, Montenegro, Croatie, Slavonie, Frontieres Militaires created from 1853 to 1865. In the final decade of his life, Valerio visited England. He was not however impressed by what he termed, "the gray and green appearance of the country." He spent his last years in ill health in Brittany, always longing to return to the Hungarian lands he so loved. |
