Note: | Lord George Anesley Valentia (British, 1770 - 1844) is an interesting historical personage in his own right. Christened George Annesley, he was the Second Earl of Mountnorris and would later become the Ninth Viscount Valentia. From 1802 to 1806 Valentia travelled extensively in both India and Northern Africa. He may even have been present at the Battle of Assaye. In 1809 Valentia's three volume book -- Voyages and Travels to India, Ceylon, the Red Sea, Abyssinia and Egypt -- was published. Complete with its valuable engraved views and maps, this book marked one of the most important early examinations of British India. Upon Lord Valentia's return to England he became an influential force in the House of Lords. This original letter was written by Lord George Anesley Valentia to Prince Frederick, Commander-in-Chief of his Majesty's Land Forces, congratulating him upon Wellington's victory at the battle of Assaye in 1803. |
Note: Recent studies in Lord Valentia's Voyages and Travels ... indicates that he was in Calcutta at the time he composed this letter. Calcutta was the seat of the British government in India.
A Biographical and Historical Note: The Battle of Assaye was fought on September 23, 1803 in central India between the Duke of Wellington (then General Arthur Wellesley) and Scindiah and the Rajah of Berar. It was a fierce conflict claiming more than two thousand lives. Despite being greatly outnumbered the British forces prevailed. The results of this important battle were twofold. Firstly, it successfully concluded the Mahratta War and brought India under British domination from its southern peninsula to the Himalayas. Secondly, it secured the reputation of England’s youngest and brightest commander, Wellington, who would later defeat Napoleon at Waterloo.
The wording of the above letter leaves no doubt that it was sent to Prince Frederick, the Duke of York and Albany. Born in 1763, Prince Frederick was the second son of King George the Third. He held the position of 'Field Marshall and Commander-in-Chief of the British Army' from 1795 to 1809 and from 1811 to 1815. Valentia thus writes about General Wellesley (Wellington) and, "the other commanders acting under your auspices."
