Note: | 'Kacho-ga' -- the artistic depiction of birds and flowers -- was one of the three traditional subjects of ancient Chinese painting and drawing. Japanese woodcut masters thoroughly explored this genre with the great Utamaro leading the way in the late eighteenth century. The nineteenth century witnessed the finest and most diverse Kacho-ga (Kacho-e). In the first half of the century such masters as Hiroshige and Hokusai contributed many bird and flower studies. Kacho-ga, however, became even more dominant in the Meiji era between (1868 & 1912). Such fine artists as Rinsai Utsushi, Watanabe Seitei, Imao Keinen and Zeshin dedicated most if not all of their efforts to the art of Kacho-ga. |
Rinsai Utsushi is known to have produced woodcuts in the capital of Edo (Tokyo) from 1869 to 1890. Practically all his art involved the study of the natural world. Most of his woodcuts were created in series form and bound into a 'gafu' (picture album), 'Ehon' (picture book), also known as, woodblock-printed book thus the center crease in this original example. This woodcut hails from Utsushi's largest and most famous set of Kacho-ga entitled, Newly Selected Nature Studies, published in 1880. These full, oban sized woodcuts are masterworks of complex color shadings and tones and deserve to be ranked among the finest examples of late nineteenth century Japanese woodcut art. This Utsushi woodcut depicts two white geese shaded by a magnificent flowering tree that is bursting with pink blossoms. One can see a woodpecker on one of these branches diligently pecking away. In the background there is a view of a curving stream with a waterfall by the mountain side. Spring is obviously the season portrayed in this beautiful work of art. | |
