Henry Emerson Tuttle 'Henry Tuttle': Along with Frank W. Benson,
Henry Emerson Tuttle is considered one of America's greatest twentieth
century etchers of birds. Tuttle was educated at Yale University and
attended classes in art at the Slade School, in London. First pursuing
a scholastic career, he created his first published drypoint engraving
in 1925 at the age of thirty-five. His initial works of art in this
medium were so widely received that Tuttle dedicated himself solely
to his art from that point on. |
|
Henry Tuttle was a full member of the American
Federation of Arts, the Brooklyn Society of Etchers and the Chicago
Society of Etchers. Examples of his original drypoint engravings are
included in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago,
the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Yale University, the British Museum,
London, and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. During the 1930's and
1940's, Henry Emerson Tuttle assumed the post of Curator of Prints at the Yale University
Art Gallery. |
|
The Print Connoisseur published illustrated articles
on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis from January,
1920 to December, 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned
for each issue and the more expensive, limited editions of 100 each
contained a signed impression in pencil by the artist. During its decade
of publishing such major artists as George Elbert Burr, Herbert Pullinger,
Frank Benson, Norman Kent, Henry Emerson Tuttle, Lynd Ward, Winkler,
Preissig, Alan Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings,
engravings and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible
for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth
century America. |
|
For the April, 1928 limited edition issue The Print
Connoisseur commissioned both Henry Emerson Tuttle and Herbert Pullinger
to contribute original prints. Tuttle's Sea Gull was used as
the frontispiece. This issue also contained an article on Tuttle's art,
written by Kleber Hall. |
|
Henry Emerson Tuttle's original drypoint engraving, "Sea
Gull" is a masterpiece of engraved art. Composed solely in the drypoint
medium, it was commissioned by The Print Connoisseur in 1928 in a sole,
limited edition of 100 signed impressions. Using the rich, velvety contrasts
of this medium, Henry Tuttle has here brilliantly caught the majesty
of this bird in flight. |
