Henry Emerson Tuttle (Henry Tuttle)

Henry Emerson Tuttle - Cock of the Walk

Cock of the Walk

Henry Emerson Tuttle's original drypoint engraving, "Cock of the Walk" is printed upon fine hand-made, laid paper and with large margins bearing the watermark of 'Head & Co.' as published in New York, in the limited edition of fifty in 1926. This impression is signed in the plate with the artist's monogramme, also signed by Henry Tuttle in pencil and numbered '5' by him under the plate-mark. Like most of Tuttle's great engravings from this period, "Cock of the Walk" is a masterpiece of delineated line and texture and a fine original example of the engraved art created by the American artist, Henry Emerson Tuttle', one of America's greatest 20th century etchers of birds.

Title: Cock of the Walk
Artist: Tuttle, Henry Emerson (Lake Forest, Illinois, 1890 - New Haven, Connecticut, 1946)
Date: 1926
Medium: Original Drypoint Engraving
Publisher: Kennedy & Company, New York
Note: Henry Emerson Tuttle 'Henry Tuttle': Along with Frank W. Benson, Henry Emerson Tuttle is considered one of America's greatest twentieth century etchers of birds. Tuttle was educated at Yale University and attended classes in art at the Slade School, in London. First pursuing a scholastic career, he created his first published drypoint engraving in 1925 at the age of thirty-five. His initial works of art in this medium were so widely received that Henry Tuttle dedicated himself solely to his art from that point on.
Henry Tuttle was a full member of the American Federation of Arts, the Brooklyn Society of Etchers and the Chicago Society of Etchers. Examples of his original drypoint engravings are included in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Yale University, the British Museum, London, and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. During the 1930's and 1940's, Henry Emerson Tuttle assumed the post of Curator of Prints at the Yale University Art Gallery.
Henry Emerson Tuttle's "Cock of the Walk" was created by the artist in 1926 and published in New York in a sole, limited edition of fifty impressions. Like most of Tuttle's great engravings from this period, it is a masterpiece of delineated line and texture. The artist has inscribed the number '5' in pencil along the lower margin. This probably signifies that this particular impression was the fifth to be struck from the plate. Only a very early drypoint impression such as this original work of art would produce the rich, velvety tones one sees here.
Edition: Limited edition of fifty impressions.
Size: 6 7/8 X 6 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)

Condition: Printed upon fine hand-made, laid paper and with large margins bearing the watermark of 'Head & Co.' as published in New York, in the limited edition of fifty impressions in 1926. Signed in the plate with Tuttle's monogramme (lower right) and signed by the artist in pencil and numbered '5' by him under the plate-mark. Due to the pressure of printing, the plate-mark along the right border has broken through the paper. This has been restored by a previous owner with an acid-free, rice paper backing. Else this is a magnificent impression and in excellent condition throughout. Cock of the Walk represents a superb, original example of the famous art of Henry Emerson Tuttle.
