Note: |
Louis Abel-Truchet: A major French painter,
etcher and lithographer of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries,
Louis Abel-Truchet studied art in Paris under Jules Lefebvre and Benjamin
Constant. He began exhibiting his art at the leading Paris Salons around
1891. A versatile artist, Louis Abel-Truchet was equally skilled at created Impressionist
landscapes and city scenes, 'Belle Epoque' images of Paris beauties and
their culture and finally, satirical art. Satirical art played a large role
in Abel-Truchet's creative efforts and scholars have sometimes compared
his work in this field to such contemporaries as Forain and Steinlen. |
|
Stalemate on the Western Front: Defeat at Home belongs
to a series of lithographs depicting Louis Abel-Truchet's first hand impressions
of World War One. At the age of 57 he volunteered for active service and
became a lieutenant of the Regiment du Genie. He later commanded a camouflage
section and received both the Croix de Guerre and the Legion d'Honneur.
Regrettably he died in combat in the closing months of the war. |
|
Judging by the age of the scolded officer in this original
lithograph, it may very well be a self-portrait of the artist himself. If
Louis Abel-Truchet's domestic life was really like this it is little wonder he
volunteered to go to war at such an advanced period of life. |
|
Most of Abel-Truchet's war lithographs were published in very
small numbers. This is the case with Stalemate on the Western Front:
Defeat at Home which was published in a limited edition of twenty-five
signed impressions. On this particular impression, Louis Abel-Truchet has also
provided a small pen and ink sketch (remarque) of a young girl rather rudely
thumbing her nose at the scene. The artist has also hand-colored this charming
little image and signed it with his A. T. monogram. |
|
Louis Abel-Truchet was a founding member of both Salon d'Automne
and la Societe des Humoristes. He was also a full member of the Societe
Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Artistes Francais. In 1919 a large commemorative
exhibition of his art took place in Paris at the Salon d'Automne. |

the above mentioned hand drawn remarque to the lower right. Signed by the
artist in pencil and numbered, '3/25' along the lower margin. A finely printed
