Paul Bough Travis 'Paul Travis': A major twentieth century American
painter and printmaker, Paul Bough Travis enrolled in the Cleveland School
of Art in 1913. There he studied art techniques, mainly under the great
modernist painter, Henry Keller (1869-1949). As well, Travis worked regularly
at this time with his fellow student and friend, Charles Burchfield. During
the First World War he enlisted in the army and served as a machine gunner
in France. After the war's end (1918) he remained oversees for a period
of one year and taught art at American universities in both France and
Germany. Paul Travis returned to Cleveland in 1920. Travis became a teacher
at the Cleveland School of Art and held that post for the following thirty-seven
years. |
|
The year of 1927 marked a decisive moment of Paul Bough Travis's career.
He was awarded a scholarship to study art abroad for a period of one year.
Instead of choosing the all too familiar sites of France or Italy, Travis
selected Africa. For his undertaking he was further sponsored by some
of Cleveland's African-American arts organizations, such as the Karamu
Theatre. In total Paul Travis traveled eight months in Africa, from Capetown
in the south to Cairo in the north, and painted and drew the peoples and
landscapes of the Congo, Rhodesia and Kenya as well as many other countries.
Apart from his impressive drawings and watercolours, Paul Bough Travis also produced
many important photographs and purchased pieces of valuable tribal art
which are now housed at the Karamu House, the Cleveland Museum of Art
and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. |
|
Upon his return exhibitions of Paul Travis's African art were
held at the Eastman-Bolton Galleries of Cleveland (1929) and at the Milwaukee
Art Institute (1931). During the 1930's his paintings and watercolours
were included in major exhibitions at the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh,
the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. In
1943 the Butler Art Institute organized a solo exhibition of Travis's
art. Today the art of Paul Bough Travis is included in many major American museums.
In 2002, the Cleveland Artists Foundation organized a major retrospective
exhibition of Travis's paintings, drawings and prints. |
|
Paul Travis's African experiences remained the primary motivating
force for his art throughout the remainder of his career. Shifting away
from traditional values his art became much more direct and spontaneous.
This amazing African portrait of a Lumbwa Tribesman drawn from life by the artist in Kenya
in 1927, shows Paul Bough Travis's art at its best. With but a minimum of lines and
shading he created a haunting and superb work of art. |
