Charles-Joseph Travies de Villers's original lithograph, " La Marchande d’Arlequins" belongs to the artist’s masterful 1845 series, Comme on dine a Paris (How One Dines in Paris). 'La Marchande d’Arlequins' was a nineteenth century French term for a peddler (or even a huckster) who sold scavenged scraps of food (leftovers), on the streets. In the lower margin the marchande states, "T’nez, jeune homme, profitez d’l’occasion. … v’la une assiette de premier choix. … tous morceaux rupins, du blanc de poulet, une tete de brochet, trois pruneaux et une queue d’ecrevisse. … vrai un a Prince of Harlequins", which loosely translates to (‘Sniff (smell), young man, take advantage of the occasion. …here is a plateful of the first choice. … every rich morsel, the white (meat) of the chicken, a pike’s head, three prunes and one crayfish tail. Truly (you are) a prince of harlequins 'leftovers'.) Note the little old lady in the background. She too is sniffing a plate of ‘rich morsels’. The exercise, however, is not to experience the princely aromas but to inspect for decay and decomposition. The Heidelberg University Library includes an impression of Charles Travies de Villers's original lithograph in its permanent collection, 'Le Charivari', 1945 (No. 244-274), #1049, Quatorzieme Annee.- No. 266 issue, dated September 23, 1845. This particular impression includes the series name, "Comme on dine a Paris", and number, "19" in the upper margin. It also includes the publication and printer's details, "Chez Aubert, Pl. de la Bourse, 29.", "Imp. d'Aubert & Cie" in the lower margin and text on verso. It is a fine, original example of the satirical art created by the 19th century French artist, Charles-Joseph Travies de Villers. |

Note: | Charles-Joseph Travies de Villers (Charles Travies): Not long ago the satirical art of Charles-Joseph Travies de Villers was not always ranked with the masters of French lithographic satire. His style, some critics deduced, was too rough and awkward to be awarded a place beside the compositions of Daumier, Gavarni, Charlet and Grandeville. His style, however, perfectly suits his subject matter; the poor, working classes of Paris. And in Charles Travies’s finest sets, such as Comme on dine a Paris, Scenes bacchiques, and Scenes de moeures (Scenes of Manners), he depicts the life of this sector of society with unparalleled clarity and brilliance. "La Marchande d’Arlequins" hails from the set entitled, Comme on dine a Paris (How One Dines in Paris). |
Born in Switzerland in 1804 Charles-Joseph Travies had moved Paris by 1820. It is erroneously reported the he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts when in fact he worked in the studio of F. J. Heim. His first lithograph was published in 1822 and he was a frequent contributor to both 'Le Charivari' and 'La Caricature' until 1845. Early in his career Charles Travies de Villers invented the hunchback, Mayeux, a most popular satirical character who epitomized the worst qualities of the self-seeking, petite-bourgeois world. Mayeux made his debut in 1830 and held the top place until 1839 when Daumier introduced Robert Macaire in his caricatures. During the latter part of his career Travies illustrated the novels of Balzac and Eugene Sue.
Baudelaire once stated that Charles-Joseph Travies was the “Prince of Bad Luck”. Indeed Travies seemed to have lived a life much like the down-and-out subjects that inhabit his art. He drank continually and was a constant visitor to the ‘barrieres’ and their less than respectable ‘bals publiques’. When the art of Travies is examined, one often feels that the artist has witnessed the scene he so acutely depicts. In many ways, therefore, Charles-Joseph Travies can be regarded as a precursor to the mid nineteenth century Realist movement.
La Marchande d'Arlequins (The Merchant of Harlequins): An original lithograph by Charles-Joseph Travies de Villers, "La Marchande d’Arlequins" belongs to the masterful series entitled, Comme on dine a Paris (How One Dines in Paris) published by 'Le Charivari in 1845. This particular lithograph includes the series name, "Comme on dine a Paris", and number, "'19" in the upper margin. It also includes the publication and printer's details, "Chez Aubert, Pl. de la Bourse, 29.", "Imp. d'Aubert & Cie" in the lower margin. It is a striking example of the satirical art created by the 19th century French artist, Charles Travies de Villers for the 19th century Paris journal, 'Le Charivari'. 'La Marchande d’Arlequins' was a nineteenth century French term for a peddler (or even a huckster) who sold scavenged scraps of food (harlequins 'leftovers'), on the streets. It appears that the unsavory practice of selling leftover French cuisine (some half chewed or past its prime) was not that uncommon in 19th century France. The food was often obtained from restaurants, hotels, wealthy mansions and even palaces. It was then garnished to make it presentable and more appetizing before selling it at the market or on the streets. Most of the engravings and images portraying merchants selling leftover food were women and it appears the buyers were people from all walks of life. The Heidelberg University Library includes an impression of this original lithograph in its permanent collection Le Charivari, 1945 (No. 244-274), #1049, Quatorzieme Annee.- No. 266 issue, dated September 23, 1845.
The Golden Age of French satirical art is generally held to be the era from 1830 to 1850. Founded by the great writer and editor, Charles Philipon (1804-1862), Le Charivari commenced its daily publication in 1832. By means of both its art and commentaries this journal led the attack upon France's political leaders, royalty, priesthood, and any other possibly corrupt individuals. Artists Philipon commissioned for satirical lithographs included such masters as Daumier, Gavarni and Travies. Many more great artists, however, contributed original lithographs to the publication which today comprise a wonderful resource of French life and humour from this long past age, such is the case for this original lithograph by Charles Travies.
