Henri-Marie-Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa 'Henri Toulouse-Lautrec': Despite his short life (36 years), Henri-Marie-Raymond
de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa is perhaps France's greatest late nineteenth
century artist. His original posters and lithographs, in particular, were
the greatest achievement of the art nouveau era and clearly influenced
the course of modern art. |
|
Henri Toulouse-Lautrec received his first art lessons from his uncle and from
the painter, Rene Princeteau. In 1882 he entered the Paris studio of Leon
Bonnat, and several months later began studies under Fernand Cormon. There
he became friends with such fellow students as Vincent Van Gogh and Emil
Bernard. In 1884 Lautrec rented an apartment in Montmartre and began his
career as a painter. Partly influenced by the work of Edgar Degas, Lautrec
created paintings and drawings of Montmartre cabarets and dance halls during
the following seven years. |
|
In 1891 Henri Toulouse-Lautrec was commissioned to design a lithographic poster
for the Moulin Rouge. This resulted in the now famous poster, Moulin Rouge,
La Goulue. In this one large lithograph the artist had boldly launched
color, line and form into the twentieth century. Gotz Adriani writes,
"Major critics began to take notice of him, and some began to support
him with enthusiasm. This sudden recognition encouraged Lautrec to continue
working in graphics, and within the decade that remained to him, he produced
a total of 351 lithographs and 9 drypoints that are among the finest works ever produced. *
|
|
In 1895 Lautrec was commissioned to create fourteen lithographic song
sheet covers for the popular ballads of Desire Dihau. Published under the
title of Melodies de Desire Dihau, each was initially printed in twenty
first state impressions, without lettering. After the titles were added
(the second state), the Paris publisher, C. Joubert. published around two
hundred impressions to accompany Dihau's music. Le Secret is the seventh
song title from the set. |
|
Two twentieth century editions of the lithographs from Melodies de Desire
Dihau exist. First, in 1935, an edition of 140 impressions of each of the
fourteen lithographs was published in Paris by H. Lefebvre. Finally, in
1978, A. C. Mazo & Cie, Paris, published an edition of 500, printed in
brown-black ink on 'Arches' watermarked paper. This impression of Le Secret
hails from this the final edition. The stone was then canceled and is currently
in the collection of the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. |
|
Like all Lautrec's great art, Le Secret reveals superb mastery of line
and form. With a few quick strokes, the image of an old woman and her cat
at the fire comes to unforgettable life. |
