While living in his native Chile Fernando Torm received scholarships to study in Paris during 1962 and 1963. As well, he received the C.R.A.V. for painting there in 1966. During this time he held exhibitions of his art at the University of Chile and in private galleries in Santiago. |
Torm moved permanently to New York City around 1967. In both 1967 and 1969 he received awards for his art from the Pan American Union of New York. In 1969 Fernando Torm co-founded StudioF/ Taller 69 in New York, along with the fellow Chilean artist, Francisco Copello. Public Institutions that include examples of Fernando Torm's art are the University of Chile, Georgetown University and the Art Museum of the Americas, Washington, D. C. |

Still life studies played a large role in Fernando Torm's art, particularly in original printmaking, where embossed, strongly colored and very detailed flowers stand out in fine relief. Such is the case with this original intaglio entitled Mallo which was created by Fernando Torm between 1970-1980. Here Torm depicts red and pink flowers known as the 'Confederate Rose, Hibiscus Mutabilis' from the (Mallow Family). This dedcidious hibiscus is said to have originated in East Asia, southeastern China, however, it is now cultivated throughout the world. The hibiscus mutabilis plant is an ornamental annual / perennial, shrub or small tree that is better known as the 'Confederate Rose', 'Dixie Rosemallow' or the 'Cotton Rosemallow'. With its double rose-like flowers that first open in pink or white, then changes to a deep red in the evening, these beautiful tropical flowers resemble ruffled colourful crepe paper. Once the flowers turn red, they remain that color until they fall off several days later. They come in a range of colors from crimson, white, pink, rose, and in between. The 'Confederate Rose, Hibiscus Mutabilis' is a tropical plant that blooms from August to October and grows well in tropical or subtropical climates. The 'Confederate Rose' flowers are sometimes confused with those of the Chinese Hibiscus, also known as ''Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis'. |
