James Torlakson: A leading American
photo-realist printmaker and painter, James Torlakson received his B.
F. A. (1969-73) and M. A. (1973-74) from the San Francisco State University.
His art was first formally exhibited in 1971 and since that time he has
distinguished himself in the mediums of watercolor, oil and aquatinting.
Drawn to imagery of the environment around us, he states, |
|
I am not interested in how closely I can mimic
physical images in paint, but rather in how I can change and distort
them to suit my personal aesthetic. When I paint an image, I break
it down in my mind and put it back together in the second dimension
as if it were a puzzle. The pieces of the puzzle are the compositional
elements of shape, texture, light, value, hue, line, etc. If the elements
are assembled harmoniously, the painting will function well as both
an abstract composition and a realistic image. *

|
These words clearly apply to one of Torlakson's
greatest aquatints, Incident on Devil's Slide. Here the combination
of realist elements transforms a truck accident into potent imagery for
both the eye and the mind. |
|
During the past thirty years Torlakson's paintings
and aquatints have been the subject of exhibitions at the Carnegie Institute,
Pittsburgh, Galerie Jurka, Amsterdam, Netherlands, the Achenbach Foundation
for the Graphic Arts, California, the Palace of the Legion of Honor, San
Francisco, and elsewhere. Today his fine art is included in the following
public collections; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Carnegie
Institute, the New York Public Library, the Detroit Art Institute, the
Chicago Art Institute and the Library of Congress, Washington, DC. |
