Hans Thoma: An influential German painter, etcher and lithographer, Hans Thoma began his artistic studies as a lithographic apprentice and as a painter of clock faces. He began his formal art training in 1859 when he enrolled at the Karlsruhe Art Academy to study under Descordes, Schirmer and Canon. After leaving the Academy in 1866, Hans Thoma moved first to Dusseldorf and then to Munich. In this latter city Thoma became friends with such major artists as Wilhelm Leibl and Arnold Bocklin. He also went to Paris in 1868 to study painting techniques under Courbet. |
|
Hans Thoma first visited Italy in 1874. Upon his return to
Germany he moved to Frankfurt and remained there until 1899. At this date,
Hans Thoma assumed the prestigious position of Director of the Karlsruhe Gallery
as well as the leading professor at the Karlsruhe Art Academy. He remained
at these posts until his retirement in 1919. |
|
A major element in Hans Thoma's art is nature, particularly
idyllic themes and representations. In this regard pastoral myths and traditions
played a large role in both his paintings and original etchings. Apollo
and Marsyas is a splendid example of his art in this genre. |
|
Today the art of Hans Thoma is included in the permanent
collections of the Karlsruhe Kunsthalle, the Municipal Museum of Chemnitz,
the Art Gallery of Constance, Hamburg Kunsthalle, Art Gallery of Heidelberg,
National Gallery of Art, Prague, National Gallery of Art, Stockholm and
the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. |
