Elisabeth Telling: A twentieth century American etcher, painter and ethnographer,
Elisabeth Telling graduated from Smith College in 1900. She then completed
her education in the arts with studies under George Senseney and Hamilton
E. Field, and with Heymann in Munich, Germany. She was a full member of
both the Chicago Society of Etchers and the California Print Makers. Today
her fine etchings are included in such major collections as the Los Angeles
County Museum of Art, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, California
State Library and the Art Institute of Chicago. |

The diaries and papers of Elisabeth Telling are today housed in the archives
of Smith College. |

A Biographical Note: Laurenus Clark Seelye (1837-1924) is an important
figure in the history of American education. He completed his education
in Heidelberg (1862) and then became a minister. After serving two years
as the pastor of the Old North Church in Springfield, Massachusetts, Laurenus Seelye
began teaching English Literature at Amherst College. He remained in that
post for ten years, until the trustees of the newly founded Smith College
appointed him to be the first president (1873). Laurenus Clark Seelye remained president
for the following 37 years and during his presidency of this important
women's college this institution grew from 14 to 1600 students. L. Clark
Seelye was named President emeritus of Smith College in 1910. |

Printed upon fine laid paper and with large full margins as created by
Elisabeth Telling around the above date. Signed and numbered, '13/100',
by her in pencil along the lower right margin. Also signed in pen to the
lower left by Laurenus Clark Seelye. In excellent condition throughout
without a trace of fading or staining. Portrait of Laurenus Clark Seelye represents a prime, original example of the art of Elisabeth Telling and
a valuable work pertaining to the history of Smith College. |
