Ito Takashi

Ito Takashi - A Traveler Crossing a Mountain Stream

A Traveler Crossing a Mountain Stream

Ito Takashi's original woodcut, "A Traveler Crossing a Mountain Stream" is printed upon Japanese mulberry paper and with full margins as published by Watanabe in Tokyo between 1930 and 1940. It is signed in the image to the lower right by Takashi with both his signature and chop mark. The 20th century Japanese artist, Ito Takashi developed a very individualistic style with strong Impressionist elements in his landscape art. This is clearly seen in this woodcut, where the play of light and shade is brilliantly rendered in the depiction of the mountain, the forest and in the swiftly moving water.

Title: A Traveler Crossing a Mountain Stream
Artist: Takashi, Ito (Kyoto, 1894 - Tokyo, 1985)
Date: c. 1930-1940
Medium: Original Japanese Woodcut Printed in Colour
Publisher: Shozaburo Watanabe, Tokyo
Note: Ito Takashi studied and graduated from both the Kyoto School of Design and the Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts. He made his first colour woodcut for Watanabe in 1922 and during the following twenty years created an oeuvre of slightly over forty woodcuts for this publisher. By Shin Hanga standards this was quite a small number: Shotei, for example, produced over five hundred woodcuts. Unlike most Shin Hanga artists, however, Ito Takashi frequently cut his own blocks and was very meticulous in his printing techniques.
In his landscape art, Ito Takashi developed a very individualistic style with strong Impressionist elements. This is clearly seen in one of his greatest woodcuts, A Traveler Crossing a Mountain Stream, where the play of light and shade is brilliantly rendered in the depiction of the mountain, the forest and in the swiftly moving water.
By 1930 a Renaissance in the art of the Japanese woodcut had taken place. Referred to simply as 'Shin Hanga' (the 'New Prints'), the woodcuts created by the great masters of this era were as splendid as the art of Japan's legendary past masters. The movement began in Tokyo, largely promoted by the influential publishing house of Watanabe, and by 1920 the finest artists were commissioned by him. Goyo and Shinsui produced modern figure studies of timeless beauty. Landscape and other views, however, attracted most of the talented artists such as Hasui, Shotei, Yoshida, Koitsu Tsuchiya, Shiro Kasamatsu and Ito Takashi. With their distinctive styles, these artists were responsible for infusing new life into the great tradition of the Japanese woodcut.
