Alex Szkola

Alex Szkola - 34th Street

34th Street

Alex Szkola's original lithograph 34th Street was created by the American artist in 1970. It takes as its subject a corner restaurant in Manhattan and is an intriguing examination of color, light and (most importantly) reflections. Through the maze of reflections from the glass and metals our eyes fix upon the central figure and subject -- the waitress behind the counter. One may at this point be reminded of Manet's famous painting of the serving girl in the Folies Bergeres with the lengthy mirror behind her. Both Manet's painting and Alex Szkola's 34th Street brilliantly contrasts the enigmatic, silent figure of the girl to the transitory confusions of the light and colors around her.

This impression is printed upon 'Rives' watermarked pure rag paper and with full margins as published in New York in the limited edition of one hundred and seventy five impressions. It is signed and numbered in pencil along the lower margin by the artist.
