An original linocut by the Cleveland artist, designer, typographer and teacher, John Szilagy, Castle in the Air dates from around the end of the Great Depression. It thus represents a haunting image of poverty and unemployment. During this year (1940) John Szilagy was working as a staff artist for the Cleveland publication, Crossroads Magazine. He contributed linoleum prints to this magazine which were used as both illustrations and front cover art. Castle in the Air may thus have been commissioned for this publication. Crossroads Magazine appears to have heavily supported Cleveland artists as its advisory board included Paul Travis and Kalman Kubinyi. |
