Samuel Donovan Swann 'Don Swann': A Maryland artist and etcher, Samuel Donovan Swann
studied art in Munich and in Rome. He dedicated most of his fine art to
historic Americana, particularly views of his native state. Today the original
etchings of Don Swann are included in such major collections as the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, New York, the United States Naval Museum and the Library
of Congress and the Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC. |
|
In the late 1930's , Don Swann was at work creating etchings
for an illustrated book dealing with 18th century Maryland. At this time
the artist pulled small numbers of individual, hand-signed etchings with
a folding page of accompanying text describing each individual image. Such
is the case with this impression of Tudor Hall, Leonardtown, Maryland.
Published by Etchcrafters, Baltimore, 1939, the completed work was entitled,
Colonial and Historic Homes of Maryland. The foreword for the book was written by none other
than the author of The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940). |
|
Of particular interest is the fact that Tudor Hall was an
ancestral home of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Recently a Fitzgerald letter to
Don Swann surfaced at auction in which the author thanked Swann for a gifted
impression of Tudor Hall: |
|
"If I seemed unappreciative of the etching of Tudor
Hall it was because I was in a somewhat distraught mood - I'm delighted
with it and very proud to own it. The reason I didn't want the one of Hampton
was because the Pleasance Ridgely from whom I am descended, outdated the
present mansion by a generation and I thought it would be pretentious of
me to hang it for that reason. But direct ancestors did live in Tudor Hall
so you can imagine the pleasure it gives me" . * |
