Louis Surugue: An eighteenth century engraver,
Louis Surugue studied design and engraving techniques in Paris, under Bernard
Picart. During his career Surugue engraved designs both after contemporary
French painters and after the designs of such old masters as Rubens, del
Sarto, da Cortona and Teniers. Besides individual plates, Louis Surugue
also contributed etchings to both commissioned portfolios and books, such
as the fine plates for Aventures de Telemaque (1736). Louis Surugue
was also the father and instructor of the engraver, Pierre Louis Surugue
(1716-1772). |
|
Louis XIV Accordant sa Protection aux Beaux-Arts is one of Louis Surugue's
largest and most impressive engravings. This portrait of Louis XIV (1643-1715)
was commissioned for the fine art portfolio, Versailles Immortalise, published
in Paris in 1720. With all its delightful surrounding ornamentation it is
a perfect example of the period of decoration that is now called the 'Louis-Quatorze
Style'. |

Charles Le Brun: An early 17th century French artist, Charles
Le Brun, also spelled Lebrun, was painter and designer during the last half
of the 17th century, during the reign of Louis XIV. He organized and carried
out most of the vast projects of paintings, sculptures and decorative
arts commissioned by the French government during three decades of the reign of Louis XIV.
He studied under Guillaume Perrier and then with Simon Vouet. For a period
of about four years he worked under Nicolas Poussin who gave him the classical training to complete the baroque teachings of
Vouet. In 1663 he became director of the Academie royale de peinture
et de sculpture. Among the most outstanding of his works were the Galerie
de Glaces (Hall of mirrors), Le Grand Escalier (Grand Stairway), and other rooms and vaults at
the Versailles. Many of the leading French artists, such as La Fosse,
Jouvenet, Houasse, and Boullogne trained in his studio. |
