Note: | Jozsef Sulyok-Papp 'J. Sulyok-Papp': A twentieth century Hungarian/American painter, and watercolour artist, Jozsef Sulyok-Papp studied art techniques in his native country. Born in Hungary, the artist spent most of his adult life in the United States and Canada. He is best known for his landscapes in the medium of oil painting and watercolour, but was also a proficient figure study artist. The artist signed his work as 'Jozsef Sulyok-Papp', or 'J. Sulyok-Papp'. Hungarian Village is signed, ‘J. Sulyok-Papp’ to the lower left. It is a striking example of the landscape painting created by this artist. |
Around 1930, Jozsef Sulyok-Papp moved to Montreal, Quebec, where he supported himself as both an artist and a gallery dealer. He is listed in Evelyn de R. McMann's, "Biographical Index of Artists in Canada". In the early 1940’s, Jozsef Sulyok-Papp, also spelt (Joseph Sulyok-Papp), came to Detroit and for the following twenty years worked in the architectural firm of Giffels. J. Sulyok-Papp was a member of the Hungarian Arts Club of Detroit, an area club that supports the study of 'Fine Arts', and in June of 1963, the Detroit Free Press announced his recent election as president of the club. During the 1960’s, J. Sulyok-Papp visited and painted in Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Austria. | |
