Note: | William Strang: A Scottish etcher, lithographer and painter of portraits, figure studies and allegorical scenes, William Strang came to London in 1875 to study at the Slade School of Art. There he became the chief pupil and artistic heir of Alphonse Legros. By the age of thirty William Strang had created over 180 original etchings, including portraits of such famous individuals as Kipling, Rider Haggard, Thomas Hardy, Legros, Seymour Haden and Lawrence Binyon. William Strang was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1906 and a full Academician in 1921. |
Self Portrait is an outstanding example of Strang's lithographic art. With its intense portrayal of both form and features. Both of William Strang's sons, Ian Strang (1886-1952) and David Strang, became fine etchers in the early twentieth century. | |

Fisher Unwin entitled, Lithography & Lithographers:Some chapters in the history of the art, by Elizabeth Robins Pennell; together with desriptions and technical explanations of modern artistic methods by Joseph Pennel. In this valuable work, Joseph Pennell examined the artistic advancements of lithography, with particular emphasis upon his contemporaries. With this in mind he commissioned original lithographs from seven artists, including James McNeil Whistler, Alphonse Legros, William Strang, Lunois, McLure Hamilton and C. H. Shannon. All these commissioned works of art were printed by London's master lithographic printer, Thomas R, Way. |
