Peter Stoyan's original landscape drawing, Old Willow Trees is a preparatory work for a linocut the artist printed and published during the same year. In the linocut the two trees in the foreground have been reversed and the landscape in the background has been extensively altered. Old Willow Trees is drawn upon green, wove paper and with full margins and is signed, monogrammed and dated by Stoyan in pencil to the lower margin. This is a fine, original example of the art created by the Canadian artist, also known as 'Peter Stoyanoff'. |

Beginning in the 1920’s Stoyan travelled quite extensively and exhibited both his landscapes and city views during this time. The Ontario Society of Artists and the Royal Canadian Academy both began to include his works in their exhibitions from 1925. |
Around 1930 Peter Stoyan visited New York City. He exhibited there for several years, working mainly as an illustrator. His work from this early period is signed either, 'Stoyanoff' (his real name) or 'Stoin'. He then returned to Toronto and began signing his work, 'Peter Stoyan', such is the case with this preparatory landscape drawing Old Willow Trees. Stoyan remained in Toronto for most of his career, with the exception that he both lived and worked in the western provinces of Alberta and British Columbia during the 1950's and early 1960's. | |
