Note: | Charles Alfred Stothard 'Charles Stothard': One of England's finest antiquarian artists of the early nineteenth century, Charles Alfred Stothard quite literally died for his art. The son of the painter, Thomas Stothard (1755-1834), Charles Stothard showed an early talent for drawing from the antique and thus became a student of the Royal Academy. His earliest works are mainly in the genre of historical painting, but around 1810, Stothard turned mainly to etching. In 1812 he began a three year undertaking etching effigies from cathedrals and churches throughout Britain. Entitled, "The Monumental Effigies of Great Britain", this remarkable series was solely designed, etched and even published by Stothard. As well, selected details in many of the plates were hand-coloured by Stothard and his assistants. This fine, original etching entitled, "Sir Guy Brian, Died 1391, From His Monument in The Abbey Church Tewkesbury" hails from this set. |
"The Monumental Effigies" secured for C. A. Stothard a strong reputation. In 1816 he was commissioned by the Society of Antiquaries to make drawings and etchings of the Bayeux Tapestries. While there, he discovered in a nearby abbey the effigies of the Plantagenets -- important monuments which had been presumed lost. Stothard's final undertaking was the illustration of monuments and ruins of Devonshire. On May 27, 1821, he was sketching a high stained glass window at Bere Ferrers Church. Slipping from his ladder, Charles Alfred Stothard was killed on the spot. So ended the career of one of England's most talented artists of the antiquary. | |
