Date: c. 1900 - 1910
Medium: Original Mezzotint Printed in Colours
Note: F. G. Stevenson: An English etcher, mixed-method engraver and mezzotint artist, F. G. Stevenson was known for his genre, sentimental and religious subjects as well as for landscapes and topographical views. Most of his mezzotints were based upon the designs of either 18th century British painters or the old masters. These were usually printed in complex ranges of tones and colours and gained for F. G. Stevenson a strong national reputation, particularly in London and Liverpool where his art was exhibited extensively in both the last decade of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th century. F. G. Stevenson resided in the London suburb of Wimbleton.
From approximately 1900 to the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, British art witnessed its last great flowering of the art of the mezzotint. One hundred years earlier such great masters as Richard Earlom, Valentine Green and David Lucas had elevated the English mezzotint to its highest level. As the Victorian era commenced, however, the pure mezzotint was overshadowed by both the mixed method engraving and by mass production techniques such as steel engraving and lithography. Mezzotinting was both labour intensive and very artistically demanding. As well, very few impressions could be pulled from the delicate mezzotint plate. British mezzotints from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries are even more technically demanding as most were printed in colours employing multiple plates.
