"Stauffer commenced as a portrait-painter and etcher.
He was a sculptor at heart, but unfortunately he did not find that
out much before the calamity befell him which ended his life. The
wearisome, torturing process of elaborating his own ideal, of finding
the direction in which his technical talent and the bent of his genius
lay, was all evolved in the field of etching. He had a keen eye for
form, loved to follow each slight elevation and depression, and continually
sought for the best means towards a full and conscientious expression
of form." *

Karl Stauffer-Bern: Despite his few years, Karl Stauffer-Bern
led a very eventful life and emerged as one of Germany's finest etchers
of the late nineteenth century. He first studied art at the Academy of
Munich, under Loefftz. At this time he also took individual instructions
in etching techniques under his friend and fellow artist, Peter Halm.
By 1880 Karl Stauffer-Bern had moved to Berlin to complete his studies and open
a studio. In the following year Max Klinger (1857-1920) also moved to
Berlin. These two great, young etchers soon became close friends. |
|
During his career Karl Stauffer-Bern etched the portraits
of such famous contemporaries as Adolph Menzel, Peter Halm and Gustav
Freytag. He also became an influential teacher in etching and in 1885
began instructing his most famous student in this field, Kathe Kollwitz.
Today the art of Karl Stauffer-Bern is included in public collections
in Berlin, Berne and Geneva. |

|
Peter Halm (Mainz, 1854 - Munich, 1923) belongs to
the first rank of late nineteenth and early twentieth century German etchers.
His remarkable creativity influenced an entire generation of artists and
helped to raise the graphic arts in Germany to a level equal to any nation
in the world. A master of landscapes, portraits and figure studies, Halm's
original etchings remain a cornerstone of late nineteenth century art. |
|
Born in Mainz, Peter Halm's artistic education began at
the Polytechnikum in Darnstadt. From 1875 to 1882 he was a student at
the Kunstakademie, Munich, under both Raab and Loefftz. In 1895 he was
appointed Professor of Etching at the Munich Academy, a position he held
until his death. From this influential post, Halm taught many of Germany's
finest printmakers of the early twentieth century. |
|
Peter Halm's first published etching dates from 1883. In
the following decades he etched many scenes in Germany, France and Italy.
Like Whistler (with whom he has often been compared), Halm etched most
of his plates directly from nature, lending a freshness and spontaneity
to his work. Major museums in Germany, England, France and the United
States include examples of his fine etchings in their permanent collections. |
