John Jacob Stanley 'John Stanley':
A twentieth century American painter and printmaker, John Jacob Stanley
lived and worked in Cincinnati, New York and Hebron, Kentucky. He received
a scholarship to study at the Art Academy of Cincinnati in 1948. There
he studied under Arthur Helwig, Charles Cutler and Paul Chidlaw. John Stanley
then received another scholarship from the Yale Summer Arts School, Norfolk,
and received instruction from Josef Albers and Peter Blume. Shortly after
he served three years with the United States Army in Germany, where he
designed gravestones for post war casualties. |
|
Upon fulfilling his military obligations, John Jacob Stanley
returned to the Art Academy of Cincinnati and graduated in 1955. After
that time he was a regular exhibitor at galleries in New York City and
Cincinnati and internationally at such exhibitions as the LX Biennale,
Paris, France. |
|
Many of John Stanley's works of art (particularly his
original etchings and lithographs) deal with strong social commentary.
"Vegetation" is not within this category. Rather, employing extensively the
deep burr of drypointing, the artist here explores the effects of overlaying
and enter-twining masses of foliage. |
