Frank Huntington Stack 'Frank Huntington': A contemporary American
painter, printmaker and cartoonist, Frank Stack received his BFA from the
University of Texas, Austin, in 1959, and his MA from the University of
Wyoming, in 1963. He also studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and at
the Academie Grande Chaumiere, Paris. Frank Stack served both as an Instructor
and Professor of Art at the University of Missouri from 1963 to 2002. He
is currently Professor Emeritus there. |
|
Frank Huntington Stack first came to public attention in the early 1960's as
a pioneer of 'underground' comics. Working under the pseudonym of 'Foolbert
Sturgeon' his 1962 comic book, The Adventures of Jesus, is considered
by some to be the first work in this genre. |
|
While 'Foolbert Sturgeon' continued to create comics throughout
the twentieth century, 'Frank Stack' developed a reputation as a 'serious'
painter and printmaker. Known mostly for his landscapes, figure studies
and nudes his work has been exhibited nationally since 1970. His art has
also been included in exhibitions in France, Italy, Switzerland, Poland,
Turkey and South Korea. In 1997 the book, Naked Glory, a Collection
of Nudes by Frank Stack, was published. |
|
Frank Huntington Stack is a full member of both the Kansas
Watercolor Society and the Missouri Water Color Society. His paintings,
lithographs and etchings are included in the following collections: the
Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Missouri-Columbia, the
State Historical Society of Missouri, Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, Lincoln,
NE, Oklahoma City Museum of Art and the Madison Art Center, Madison, Wisconsin. |
|
A Note on the Monoprint: Monoprinting (also
termed 'monotype') is quite literally a singular form of printmaking. As
the name implies only one impression can be created and some critics even
argue that the medium should be classified as a form of painting. Briefly,
the artist paints an image on a flat surface, usually glass. A sheet of
paper is then immediately impressed onto this surface. Under the hand of
a skilled artist the combination of paint and pressure yields a unique work
of art with distinctive textural qualities. Such great masters from the
past as Castiglione, Blake and Degas excelled in this medium. Frank Stack's
Figure Study is a splendid illustration of the contemporary monoprint. |
