Robert E. Spray 'Robert Spray': An important Arizona artist, Robert E. Spray moved
from Spokane with his family to Oakland, California, in 1923. After graduating
from High School he was awarded a scholarship and studied art techniques
at the California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland. In 1937, Robert Spray, along
with several other Oakland artists such as Norval Gill, was commissioned
by the W.P.A. Federal Art Project, to create stained glass windows, murals,
mosaics and paintings. Shortly thereafter both Spray and Gill settled in
Tucson and became full members of the Tucson Art Center. |

With the outbreak of the Second World War, Robert Spray served
in the U.S. Army. After the war's end he returned to Tucson, joining the
staff at Consolidated Vultee as a draftsman and illustrator. Several years
later, Robert Spray opened his silkscreen printing company and was instrumental
in introducing this newly invented artform to the artists of Arizona. During
the following years Robert Spray printed not only his own original silkscreens
from his studio but also those of other Tucson artists. Robert E. Spray
was awarded First Prize for his art from the Tucson Fine Art Association
in 1951. |
