Robert Spencer: One of America's greatest painters
of urban life, Robert Spencer first studied art at the National Academy
of Design and later under William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. During
his career, Spencer won many awards, including the Sesnan medal from the
Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1914), the Inness medal from the National
Academy of Design (1914)the gold medal from the San Francisco Pan Pacific
Exposition (1915) and the Isidor Gold Medal from the National Academy
of Design (1928). |

Robert Spencer was elected an Associate member of the prestigious
National Academy of Design in 1914 and elected an Academician in 1920.
Today his paintings and drawings are found in the following collections;
the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago,
the Carnegie Institute, the Phillips Memorial Gallery, Washington, the
Corcoran Gallery, the Detroit Institute of Arts and the National Arts
Club, New York. |

Robert Spencer was one of the first and finest painters
to study the rapidly changing scene of American city life during the first
decades of the twentieth century. His sensitive portrayals often examined
the plight of the poor within this environment. Tenements is most
likely a preparatory study for one of Spencer's paintings. |

the artist in the lower right corner. The drawing contains one scrape
mark and a diagonal crease running across the upper right corner. Else
in good condition throughout. This original drawing represents a superb
example of the famous art of Robert Spencer. |
