Alessandro Specchi’s, "Palace of the Grand Duke of Tuscany in Piazza Madama", is an original etching published in Rome in 1699. Since the eighteenth century it has been known as the ‘Palazzo Madama’. It was the residence of the Medici family until 1737 when it was purchased by Pope Benedictus XIV. In 1871 the Palazzo Madama became the official residence of the Senate of Italy. Today the palace continues to house the Italian Upper Chamber. Alessandro Specchi’s seventeenth century etching also portrays the Palazzo Carpegna (to the right) and the Palazzo Giustiniani (to the background, left). In the foreground is the Piazza Madama. In the piazza and the adjoining streets Specchi has delineated an interesting assemblage of pedestrians, vendors and other individuals. This original Specchi etching is printed upon heavy seventeenth century hand-made, laid paper and with full margins as published in Rome by Domenico de Rossi in 1699. It is the tenthth numbered view from the "Nuovo Teatro delle Fabriche, et Edificii, In Prospettiva di Roma moderna", a set of palaces and stately homes. "Palazzo del Serenis, Gran DVCA di Toscana in Piazza Madama", the (Palazzo Madama) is an important example of the famous art of Alessandro Specchi and Italian architectural etching at the end of the seventeenth century. |

Note: | Allessandro Specchi: A late seventeenth and early eighteenth century architect and artist, the name of Allessandro Specchi is associated with some of the most notable buildings of Rome. Among many other accomplishments he was the principal architect of the Farnese Piazza, the Bank of Rome, the Via del Corso and the famous Spanish Steps. As an original etcher, Specchi appears to have been entirely self-taught. The majority of his finest graphic art will be found in the 52 etchings he composed for the final set of the "Nuovo Teatro". Allessandro Specchi's The "Palazzo del Serenis, Gran DVCA di Toscana in Piazza Madama", the ‘Palazzo Madama’ is the tenth numbered view from the 1699 "Nuovo Teatro" set of palaces and stately homes. |
Like his precursor, Giovanni Battista Falda, Allessandro Specchi’s etchings are notable for their accuracy and precise details. Yet Specchi was much more atmospheric and imaginary in his compositional techniques than any other Roman etcher of his day. Look, for example, at the very powerful contrasts of light and shade he employs. As well, most of Allessandro Specchi’s architectural renderings portray the buildings from a ground level or other comparable perspective to capture the living elements within. Finally, when incidental figures are included they are depicted with vivid gestures or poses. It should therefore come as no surprise that when the most famous architectural etcher of them all, Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778), studied the art of his Roman precursors it was the etched views of Alessandro Specchi that most inspired him. The brilliant techniques employed by Specchi were undoubtedly a strong influence upon the later art of Piranesi.

One of the most important architectural projects of the seventeenth century was the urban renovation of Rome. Under the leadership of Pope Alessandro VII (1655-1667), Rome dramatically emerged as one of the most modern and beautiful cities of the new Baroque age. Within several decades spacious roadways were constructed, monumental buildings arose, and many public squares appeared with elaborate fountains and monuments. To be sure, this massive undertaking was meant to underline the absolute power of the Papacy but it also brought forth a new flowering of Italian art and architecture.
The "Nuovo Teatro" was initiated in 1665 to depict the new Rome in a series of etchings. What it gave to future generations was a magnificent historical record of views etched by two of Italy’s greatest architectural artists. The printing and publishing of these important etchings was entrusted to Giacomo de Rossi (1626-1691), the head of the most dominant Roman publishing house. (Sons and nephews of de Rossi, in fact, continued the publishing house until 1738 when the business was sold to Pope Clement XII to form the basis of the Regia Calcografia.) Altogether, four sets of "Nuovo Teatro" were created during the seventeenth century. Volumes one (35 etchings) and two (17 etchings) were both published in the year of 1665 and dealt mainly in views of the new piazzas, gardens, terraces and their surrounding buildings. Volume 3 (38 etchings) was published in 1669 and concentrated upon the newly constructed churches of Rome. Every plate from the first three sets was both designed and etched by the influential architectural artist, Giovanni Battista Falda (1643-1678). For reasons unknown the fourth and final volume (52 etchings) did not appear until 1699. It was published by Giacomo’s successor, Domenico de Rossi, and featured views of the palaces and stately homes of Rome. Each plate was designed and etched by the famous architect and etcher, Alessandro Specchi (1668-1729). "Palazzo del Serenis, Gran DVCA di Toscana in Piazza Madama", the (Palazzo Madama) hails from the Domenico de Rossi edition published in 1699.
