This house was founded about the year 684, and was dedicated to St. Paul. On its completion, Benedict peopled it with seventeen Monks from Wiremoth, and placed over them as Abbot one Ceolfridus. Here the venerable Bede was educated; the place of his birth, according to most writers, being in this neighbourhood ...

Various are the superstitions and ridiculous stories told of this place, among which are these: ‘That it was never dark in Jarrow Church; and that the windows were of horn instead of glass’. The latter, perhaps, relates to some almost forgotten tradition concerning the introduction of glass by Benedict."

Note:	Samuel Sparrow: An eighteenth century British architectural etcher and engraver, Samuel Sparrow was extensively commissioned by the publishers, particularly for plates depicting antiquities in Cumberland, Durham and Essex, such as this original engraving depicting The Monastery of Jarrow, or Gyrwi, Durham.
	Francis Grose's "The Antiquities of England and Wales": An eminent English antiquary, Francis Grose (1731-1791) first served as a paymaster in the Surrey militia. His book-keeping methods, however, were less than stellar and after losing a considerable sum of money he turned to authoring works on heraldry and antiquities. His first and best known publication, "The Antiquities of England and Wales", was published in parts beginning in 1773 and was completed fifteen years later in 1787. Both for its fine scholarship and accurately rendered engravings, the work became a cornerstone for early English architecture and cultural study. The volumes were published in London by Samuel Hooper. Both Grose and Hooper also designed some of the plates and commissioned such engravers as Francis Jukes (1745-1812), Benjamin Pouncy, Richard Godfrey, Adam Smith, Samuel Sparrow and others to work upon the project. "The Monastery of Jarrow, or Gyrwi, Durham" was engraved by Samuel Sparrow in 1773 and was published by Samuel Hooper, Ludgate Hill, London for Francis Grose's "The Antiquities of England and Wales".
	In 1789 Francis Grose set out for Scotland in order to create a similar work for that country. "The Antiquities of Scotland" was completed in 1790 and published the following year. In the summer of 1789 Grose met the Scottish poet, Robert Burns, and the two authors became close friends. Other principal books by Francis Grose are "A Treatise on Ancient Armour and Weapons" (1785), "A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue" (1785), "A Provincial Glossary, with a Collection of Local Proverbs and Popular Superstitions" (1788) and "Rules for Drawing Caricatures" (1788).

Here likewise are two very antient carved oaken reading desks, having each seats for four persons. But what is esteemed the greatest curiosity, and as such is carefully kept under lock and key in the vestry, is the chair of venerable Bede, a great two-armed chair, said to have been deposited here ever since the Dissolution of the Monastery. It is of oak, and appears to have been hewn out with an axe, except that at the top of the back, the cross piece is mortified to the standards or upright parts, which serve both for legs and its support: these with the seat and sides are very ancient; but the back, according to the person who shows it, has been since added." * Francis Grose
