Raphael Soyer - Standing Figure Study of a Woman

Standing Figure Study of a Woman

Raphael Soyer's original etching and drypoint engraving, "Standing Figure" dates from 1966. Since the era of the Great Depression Raphael Soyer had become a foremost American painter and lithographer. In 1966, however, he turned his talents to the art of etching, many depicting studies of models in his studio. Most, including this original example, were published in very small editions of thirty limited impressions.

"Standing Figure Study of a Woman" is printed upon thick pure rag paper and with full, deckled margins as published in New York in 1966 in the sole limited edition of only thirty impressions. It is signed by the artist in pencil and numbered. This figure study is an important, original example of the famous art created by the 20th century American artist, Raphael Soyer

Title: Standing Figure Study of a Woman

Note: Raphael Soyer is undoubtedly one of America’s most famous twentieth century artists. He emigrated to New York City at the age of ten and shortly thereafter studied at the Art Students League while supporting himself and his family by working in factories and selling newspapers. Recognition thankfully came quickly to Soyer and in 1917 he published his first original lithograph. Soyer went on to become one of the greatest chroniclers of life in the Depression era and beyond. A full member of the National Academy, Raphael Soyer’s original etchings, lithographs and paintings are included in most major American and international collections.
One writer states, “The glamour and gaiety of city life or the impressive vistas and mighty skyscrapers that had been attractive subjects for New York painters were ignored by Raphael Soyer as he turned toward other kinds of realities and created his compassionate images of less fortunate people. ... Soyer’s sympathetic portrayals of the misfortunate and indigent were untouched by the doctrinaire or harsh commentaries of some of his artist friends.” *
Raphael Soyer’s compassion is a key factor in all his imagery. In Standing Figure Study of a Woman, for example, Soyer draws our eyes foremost to the emotional state of his model. While this is a study of a nude it is more a portrait of a person. Only the hand of a great master such as Raphael Soyer could combine these elements with such artistry.
Provenance: This original etching and drypoint engraving hails from the collection of Roger Trlak and bearing his inventory number, T-1224, on the verso. Roger Trlak (1934-1975) established the commercial art company of Martin-Trlak in Chicago. In 1972 he also opened the RST Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona where he exhibited not only his own large collection of mostly contemporary art but also held important exhibitions of many modern artists. These Included such major American and international printmakers as Joseph Hirsch, Luigi Lucioni and Paul Wunderlich. Among Trlak’s closest friends in the arts community were Raphael Soyer, Ivan Albright and Hans Burkhardt. Their original prints and paintings were constantly exhibited at the RST Gallery until it was closed in 1975 due to Trlak’s untimely death.
