Note: |
George Soper: A fine British etcher and painter of
the 1920's era, George Soper is widely known for his depictions of rustic
scenes and of animals in motion. Soper first studied art at Ramsgate and
spent the early part of his career as an illustrator. He began studying
etching under Sir Frank short in 1905, however, and from that date most
of his talents were directed towards original printmaking. Soper's etchings
were and are considered to be among the finest of their time and he was
a regular exhibitor at the prestigious Royal Academy as well as being
a full member of the Royal Engravers. Both the British Museum and the
Victoria and Albert Museum, London, include examples of his etchings in
their collections. |
|
A Cornish Farm clearly indicates the quality of George Soper's
art. Using both etching and dry pointing, he creates strong areas of light
and shade without sacrificing any of the marvellous details found in this
charming scene. It is only, in fact, upon very close observation that
one begins to notice the life surrounding the farm, such as the little
girl with her hoop and the man shoeing his horse. This is a major example
of British etching from its golden era of the 1920's. |
Edition: |
Soper did not number his original etchings. Most, however,
were published in editions of seventy-five impressions. |
