Bernard Solomon's original wood engraving "Old Macedonian" was created by the American artist while he was studying at the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology. It was published there in a limited edition of two hundred impressions and included in a portfolio entitled, "Student Independent 8". The fine qualities of Bernard Alan Solomon’s wood engraved art were recognized early. He had already received a major award from the Northwest Printmakers one year before the creation of "Old Macedonian". |

Note: | Bernard Alan Solomon 'Bernard Solomon': A contemporary American wood engraver, Bernard Alan Solomon studied printmaking techniques under Misch Kohn, at the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology. While still a student (1968), he won an award for his art from the Northwest Printmakers. By 1974 Bernard Solomon had accepted a position in the Art Department at Georgia Southern College, Statesboro, where he founded the Southern Graphics Council and also, taught there for many years. |
Bernard Solomon’s art has been the subject of numerous one-man exhibitions throughout the United States. Besides his individual relief prints (such as "Old Macedonian"), Bernard Solomon is also famous for his finely crafted books which feature his block prints and wood engravings. These include, "The Zaddick Christ: A Suite of Wood Engravings and Song of Songs" (1983). | |
Today the art of Bernard Solomon is included in the permanent collections of such institutions as The Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art, Tulsa, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D. C.. An original wood engraving entitled, "Old Macedonian" is listed in the collection of the Krannert Art Museum (Kam), 500 Peabody Drive, Champaign, Illinoise, USA, object number: 1982-11-14.2 | |
