Note: This original chromolithograph was created around 1885 for Dr. J. B. Lynas & Son, Logansprot, Indiana to advertise 'Queen Beauty Toilet Soap'. This striking soap label depicts a quarter length portrait of a young woman. Dr. J. B. Lynas (1835-1901), manufactured family remedies, such as the catarth remedy, the rheumatic liniment, liver pills, blood and liver tonic, and other medicinal items. His firm later expanded the product line to include, flavored extracts, soaps, lotions, hair tonics & scalp cleansers, perfumes, tooth paste and other beauty products for women and his products all carried the (Dr. Lynas) or (JBL) brand name on their labels. By the 1890's the firm had offices throughout the United States, Paris, London and elsewhere. Around the turn of the century the business was incorporated as, Dr. J. B. Lynas & Son, still located in Logansprot, Indiana. Beginning around 1870 Advertisers regularly allied their products to appealing visual imagery to sell their products. Competing companies were quick to recognize the enormous potential of this artistic technique. By the 1890's they were creating the most expensive and most creative art, but by the turn of the century, the far less costly advances of photography and its devices made this original and complex form of printmaking obsolete. As antique forms of art, they reflect the true tastes of the times. Below, you will fine a listing of 19th century trade cards advertising various soap products.
