Ethel Lubell Smul 'Ethel L. Smul': A fine
twentieth century New York painter and lithographic artist, Ethel Smul
first studied art at Hunter College. She then completed her education at the Art Students League
of New York, under Brackman, Olinsky and Boardman Robinson. Ethel Smul
was equally accomplished with both landscapes and figure studies. She began to exhibit her art
around 1925 at such major institutions as the National Academy of Design,
the National Association of Women Artists, Library of Congress,
the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Riverside Museum, and other shows in New
York, Boston, Rochester and Philadelphia. Ethel Smul was a member of
the American Society of Contemporary artists, New York (ASCA),
the New York Society of Women artists, the New York Teachers Guild and
the Society of Independent Artists. Examples of her artwork can be found
in the permanent collections of the American Society of Contemporary
Artists, New York, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown,
Ohio and other major private and public institutions. This artist can
be found listed under various names; Ethel Lubell Smul was the name she
used after she married Dr. Josef Smul, however, she usually signed her artwork under the name; 'Ethel L. Smul'. |
|
Most of Ethel Smul's original lithographs were created during
the 1930's decade. Some were commissioned by New York publishers, while most
were printed and published by her hand. Due to the very small edition size
of Mardi Gras (twenty-four), it likely that this original lithograph falls into the latter category.
Other original lithographs created by the artist include, Winter in the
Park, New York, Striped Rooster, the Sail, Along
the Water's Edge, Under Sea Enchantment and Winter,
all were printed in very small editions and all were signed "Ethel L. Smul", by the artist. |
|
Like so many great American prints from the decade of the
Depression, Ethel Smul's original lithograph, Mardi Gras portrays a world far removed from the economic
hardship of the times. Here, in the joyful expressions of two revelers,
Ethel Lubell Smul has brilliantly captured the spirit of this still famous New Orleans
carnival. |
