Lawrence Beall Smith began exhibiting his art in 1935 and gained a strong national reputation by 1941 when a one-man exhibition of his art was launched at the Whitney Museum in New York. During World War II he created posters for the war effort and was an artist for the D-Day landings in Normandy. Commissioned by the Abbott Laboratories in 1944, Lawrence Beall-Smith also served as a war correspondent covering the activities of the Medical Corps in Europe. Throughout the following years, Lawrence Beall Smith's art figured prominently in most major exhibitions, including those of the prestigious National Academy.
Besides his paintings and sculptures in stone, Lawrence Beall Smith was also a highly gifted lithographic artist and illustrator. In this latter category, he illustrated such fine books as Robin Hood (1952), The History of Tom Jones; A Foundling (1964), Oliver Twist (1956), and many other well-known books. Today examples of his original lithographs, paintings and sculpture are included in the permanent collections of such major galleries as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, the University of Chicago, and the Library of Congress, Washington, DC.
Children and figure studies are a major theme in Lawrence Beall Smith's lithographic art. From 1940 onwards he was commissioned many times by the Associated American Artists of New York for his delightful lithographs upon these and other subjects.
Demolition was probably commissioned by the Associated American Artists of New York in a sole limited edition of 100 impressions. Since its creation in the mid 1930's the Associated American Artists published original graphic art from such great masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh and others. It published etchings and lithographs of no less stature during the 1960's,1970's and 1980's as contributing artists from around the world included Lily Harmon, Jacob Landau, W. B. Eberhard Eggers, Peter Klitsch, Robert Bero, David Shapiro, Jack Levine, Chaim Koppelman, Joseph Margulies, James Kearns, Gregory Masurovsky, Jack Coughlin and Sidney Chafetz. Lawrence Beall Smith was one of the A.A.A. s most active artists and contributed his sought after lithographs for over four decades.
Demolition is one of Lawrence Beall Smith's last great works of lithographic art. With its brilliant contrasts of light and shade it depicts an African American worker atop a beautiful, stone arch. With hammer in hand he is about to destroy this beautiful edifice, perhaps to make way for a parking lot or some other modern urban monstrosity. The resigned look upon his face beautifully captures the emotion of the moment.
