Jules Andre Smith: A leading American etcher,
painter, architect, sculptor, illustrator and writer, Jules Andre Smith
was born to American parents in Hong Kong. He came to the United States
at an early age and received degrees from Cornell University in the profession
of architecture. Shortly after graduating, Smith turned to the visual arts
and during the early twentieth century lived and worked in New York, Pine
Orchard, CT, and Hingham Center, MA. |

Andre Smith's first experiments in etching date from around
1910. During the following twenty years he created a number of fine works
of art in this medium, many dealing with landscapes and city views of Manhattan,
New England and the Tropics. His etchings were held in high esteem for both
their boldness and simplicity. Jules Andre Smith was a full member of the
Society of American Etchers. |

Later in his life Jules Andre Smith moved to Maitland, Florida, where
he founded and directed a school and artist's colony called, The Research
Studio. This well known school is today known as The Maitland Art Center. |

by the artist around 1920 to 1930. Signed in pencil under the plate-mark.
Containing slight matt toning in the outer margins else a richly printed
impression with full plate-tone. Antibes represents a prime, original
example of the art of Andre Smith. |
