The Greater Light To Rule The Day

Anne Smith Hook worked with such mediums as serigraphy, woodcutting, block printing, etching and watercolour during her career. This original deep etching entitled, "The Greater Light To Rule The Day" represents one of her largest and finest works of art from her lyrical abstraction period. Anne Smith Hook is now recognized as one of Ontario's most important post-war artists.

Note:	Anne Smith Hook permanently moved to Canada from Caven County, Ireland, in 1922. Largely self-taught, she also studied under C. Atkins in the 1940's and with Carl Schaefer at the Ontario college of Art. She became a full member of the Federation of Canadian Artist in 1944 and of the Canadian Painter-Etchers in 1952. Anne Smith Hook accepted the post of Vice-president from 1967 - 1969. Later, she assisted in establishing Visual Arts Ontario and the Prints and Drawings Council of Canada (1976)
	As a creative artist, Anne Smith Hook was a tireless experimenter. She worked with equal success in serigraphy, woodcutting, block printing, etching and watercolour. During the 1950's, her reputation was based largely upon her intimate botanical and floral studies in this media. By 1960, however, she had turned increasingly towards a strongly personal form of lyrical abstraction. "The Greater Light To Rule The Day" is a striking example of this period.
Edition:	Anne Smith Hook rarely numbered her original prints. Practically all her prints, however, were printed by (the artist herself) in editions of less than thirty.
