Note: | Anne Smith Hook permanently moved to Canada from Caven County, Ireland, in 1922. Largely self-taught, she also studied under Caven Atkins in the 1940's and at the Ontario College of Art, under Carl Schaefer. She became a full member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, in 1944, and of the Canadian Painter-Etchers, in 1952. Anne Smith also served as vice-president of the Canadian Painter-Etchers from 1967 to 1969. She later assisted in establishing Visual Arts Ontario and the Prints and Drawings Council of Canada (1976). |
Anne Smith Hook rarely numbered her original prints in specific editions. Practically all her prints, however, were printed by the artist herself in editions of thirty, or less impressions. Today the fine art of Anne Smith Hook is included in such public collections as The Windsor Art Gallery, Hart House, University of Toronto, Edmonton Art Gallery, University of Maine and Melbourne Museum, Australia.
As a creative artist, Anne Smith Hook was a tireless experimenter. She worked with equal success in block printing, serigraphy, woodcutting, etching and watercolour. During the 1950's decade her reputation was based largely upon her botanical and floral depictions which stressed strong design elements. By 1960, however, her art had turned increasingly towards a personal form of lyrical abstraction. In both techniques she excelled and as such Anne Smith Hook has become recognized as an important post-war Canadian artist. "Snapdragon" displays Anne Smith Hook's ability to capture strong design elements within a naturalistic setting. Such is the case with this botanical, where Anne applies only two basic colors, brown and white with striking results.
