Netherhall, Essex

Adam Smith's "Netherhall, Essex" is an original engraving created for Francis Grose's "The Antiquities of England and Wales" published by Samuel Hooper in 1775.

Netherhall, Essex: "Netherhall, in the parish of Roydon, is so called from its low situation; it stands about one mile and a half south or south-west of the Town and Church. It was anciently held of the Abbey of Waltham, which purchased here of Alexander de Alrichesey, anno 1280, one messuage (manse), twenty-three acres arable and five acres of pasture land. The first mention of it as a manor is in 1401, when Thomas son of John Organ conveyed it to Nicholas Collern and Thomas Prudence. It and who therefore were probably the builders of the House. John Archer, of Coopersale, Esq. is the present proprietor.

In 1769, when this Drawing was made, there were standing the entire brick gateway here represented; part of the wall, with two small towers at two of its angles, and a part of the house then used as a farmhouse, but since pulled down."

Note:	Francis Grose's "The Antiquities of England and Wales": An eminent English antiquary, Francis Grose (1731-1791) first served as a paymaster in the Surrey militia. His book-keeping methods, however, were less than stellar and after losing a considerable sum of money he turned to authoring works on heraldry and antiquities. His first and best known publication, "The Antiquities of England and Wales", was published in parts beginning in 1773 and was completed fifteen years later in 1787. Both for its fine scholarship and accurately rendered engravings, the work became a cornerstone for early English architecture and cultural study. The volumes were published in London by Samuel Hooper who also designed some of the plates. Hooper commissioned such engravers as Adam Smith, Francis Jukes (1745-1812), Benjamin Thomas Pouncy, Samuel Sparrow, Richard Bernard Godfrey (London, b. 1728) and others to work upon the project. "Netherhall, Essex" was engraved by Adam Smith in 1775 and was published by Samuel Hooper, Ludgate Hill, London for Francis Grose's "The Antiquities of England and Wales".
	In 1789 Francis Grose set out for Scotland in order to create a similar work for that country. "The Antiquities of Scotland" was completed in 1790 and published the following year. In the summer of 1789 Grose met the Scottish poet, Robert Burns, and the two authors became close friends. Other principal books by Francis Grose are "A Treatise on Ancient Armour and Weapons" (1785), "A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue" (1785), "A Provincial Glossary, with a Collection of Local Proverbs and Popular Superstitions" (1788) and "Rules for Drawing Caricatures" (1788).
