Douglas Ian Smart 'D. I. Smart': A leading English etcher, engraver
and watercolourist, of the 1920's and 1930's, Douglas Ian Smart studied
printmaking techniques in London, under Sir Frank Short. His art dealt
mainly with landscape scenes in England, France, Spain and Italy, and
particularly delineated river views and city scenes. From 1920 to 1940
D. I. Smart was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy. Kenneth Guichard
lists La Rochelle as being among Smart's most important original
engravings. * |

Douglas Ian Smart was a charter member of the prestigious Royal
Engravers. Selections of his original etchings and engravings are now
housed in the permanent collections of the British Museum and the Victoria
and Albert Museum, London. |
